Good Stuff in the The Bible

But isn't there some good stuff in the Bible?

Well yes there is, although surprisingly little for such a big book. Indeed, if the bad, boring, and useless passages were removed from the Bible and only the good retained, the Bible would be nothing more than a small pamphlet.

But Bible-believers are unwilling to edit the Bible. So the good verses, when not invalidated by their immediate context, are contradicted elsewhere in the Bible. There is not a single good idea in the entire Bible that is taught consistently throughout. Consequently, it is worse than useless as a moral, philosophical, political, or scientific guide.

Still, I think it's important to point out the good stuff in the Bible, and so I have highlighted the good verses and provided a "thumbs up" icon to mark them in the text.

    Exodus

  1. "Honor thy father and thy mother." 20:12

This is the first verse that I've marked good in the SAB. (Let me know if I've missed any earlier verses.)

  6. "He shall pay for the loss of his time, and shall cause him to be thoroughly healed." 21:18-19

  256. The Golden Rule: Treat others as you would like to be treated. 6:31-34

  257. "Love your enemies." Well, it's a nice thought. But it seems strange coming from someone who damns his enemies to hell. (Mark 16:16) 6:35

  258. "Be ye therefore merciful, as your Father also is merciful." Well I'm glad Jesus thinks we should be merciful. But the Old Testament God is a strange role model for mercy! (See 1 Sam 15:2-3 for an example of the OT God's mercy.) 6:36

  259. "Judge not ... condemn not ... forgive." 6:37

  260. Love thy neighbor as thyself. 10:27

  261. The story of the good Samaritan gets my vote for the best bible story. We should all "go and do likewise." 10:30-37

Pay your taxes. Keep state and church separate. 20:25

  263. From his comments on the widow's mites, it appears that Jesus favored progressive taxation. 21:1-3

  264. John

  265. Jesus tells those who'd like to stone to death an adulteress that whoever among them that is without sin should "cast the first stone." Good advice -- but it directly contradicts the teachings of the Old Testament (Lev 20:20). If that wasn't a good law then why did God make it? Has he since changed his mind? Shouldn't it then be removed (along with most of the OT) from the bible? 8:7

  266. "The truth shall make you free." 8:32

  267. "Love one another." 13:34

  268. "This is my commandment, That ye love one another." If this is what it takes to be a Christian, then count me in. Unfortunately, Christians often take Jesus' commandment to mean that Christians should love other, like-minded Christians, and to hell with everybody else. 15:12, 17

  269. Pilate asked Jesus a very good question: "What is truth?" 18:38

  270. Acts

  283. Associate with the lowly. Don't pretend to be wiser than you are. 12:16

  362. "Love thy neighbor as thyself." 2:8

  363. Help others that are in need; don't just wish them well. This is good advice, though it's unfortunate that James restricted this help to "brothers". Did he mean by this that you only need to help fellow believers? 2:15-16

  364. James ridicules those who say salvation is by faith alone. He says the devils believe in God. Will their faith save them? 2:19
