There were a total of seventy people in Jacob's family when they came to Egypt. [11]
29 And Joseph made ready his chariot, and went up to meet Israel his father, to Goshen, and presented himself unto him; and he fell on his neck, and wept on his neck a good while.
30 And Israel said unto Joseph, Now let me die, since I have seen thy face, because thou art yet alive.
31 And Joseph said unto his brethren, and unto his father's house, I will go up, and shew Pharaoh, and say unto him, My brethren, and my father's house, which were in the land of Canaan, are come unto me;
32 And the men are shepherds, for their trade hath been to feed cattle; and they have brought their flocks, and their herds, and all that they have.
33 And it shall come to pass, when Pharaoh shall call you, and shall say, What is your occupation?
34 That ye shall say, Thy servants' trade hath been about cattle from our youth even until now, both we, and also our fathers: that ye may dwell in the land of Goshen; for every shepherd is an abomination unto the Egyptians.
God calls Jacob "Jacob", though he said in Genesis 32:28 and 35:10 that he would no longer be called Jacob but Israel.
God promises to bring Jacob safely back from Egypt, but Jacob dies in Egypt (Genesis 49:33).
God killed his first two sons in chapter 38.
The list includes six sons, 23 living grandsons (two were killed by God in Canaan), two great-grandsons, and one granddaughter, for a grand total of 32.
And yet verse 15 says there were 33.
Notice that this verse includes "sons and daughters". So there Jacob and Leah had 31 male descendants, but only one female descendant (Dinah).
It's also interesting that the Jacob's wives and daughters-in-law are not included in the list.
How many descendants of Jacob and Leah went to Egypt with Jacob?
The list of the descendants of Jacob and Zilpah includes fifteen males and one female, continuing the amazing male/female ratios in the Bible.
There are four lists of Benjamin's sons in the Bible, and none of them agree. This one lists ten sons, Num 26:38-40, 1 Chr 7:6 lists three, and 1 Chr 8:1-2 lists five. Only one son (Bela) is found in all four lists.
Who were the sons of Benjamin?
Twelve sons, no daughters.
Five sons, no daughters.
There's another classic "descendants of so-and-so" commercial break, but at least it coincides with Jacob's family and their trek to Egypt. Even going so far as mentioning how many folks in the family were making the journey. The first mention of Benjamin's kids is made here, but no indication of a wife.
