1 When he was come down from the mountain, great multitudes followed him.
When Jesus finished preaching his sermon on the mount, he came down from the mountain, followed by great multitudes.
2 And, behold, there came a leper and worshipped him, saying, Lord, if thou wilt, thou canst make me clean.
A leper came to worship him, saying,
Lord, if you want to, you can make me clean.
3 And Jesus put forth his hand, and touched him, saying, I will; be thou clean. And immediately his leprosy was cleansed.
Jesus touched him and said,
I would like to, so be clean.
And immediately the man was clean.
4 And Jesus saith unto him, See thou tell no man; but go thy way, shew thyself to the priest, and offer the gift that Moses commanded, for a testimony unto them.
Don't tell anyone. [1]
5 And when Jesus was entered into Capernaum, there came unto him a centurion, beseeching him,
6And saying, Lord, my servant lieth at home sick of the palsy, grievously tormented.
Lord, my servant [3] is at home grievously tormented with the palsy.
7And Jesus saith unto him, I will come and heal him.
Jesus said,
I'll come heal him.
8 The centurion answered and said, Lord, I am not worthy that thou shouldest come under my roof: but speak the word only, and my servant shall be healed.
9 For I am a man under authority, having soldiers under me: and I say to this man, Go, and he goeth; and to another, Come, and he cometh; and to my servant, Do this, and he doeth it.
The centurion said,
I'm not worthy that you should visit my house.Just say the word and my servant will be healed.
10When Jesus heard it, he marvelled, and said to them that followed, Verily I say unto you, I have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel.
When Jesus heard it, he marveled [4], and said,
I've never seen so great a faith in Israel.
11 And I say unto you, That many shall come from the east and west, and shall sit down with Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob, in the kingdom of heaven.
Many will come and sit down in the kingdom of heaven with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.
12But the children of the kingdom shall be cast out into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
But the children of the kingdom [5] will be cast out into the outer darkness where they will weep and gnash their teeth.
13 And Jesus said unto the centurion, Go thy way; and as thou hast believed, so be it done unto thee. And his servant was healed in the selfsame hour.
Jesus said to the centurion,
What you have believed will be done to you.
And the servant was healed at the same hour.
14 And when Jesus was come into Peter's house, he saw his wife's mother laid, and sick of a fever.
15And he touched her hand, and the fever left her: and she arose, and ministered unto them.
So he touched her hand and healed her.
Then she got up and served them.
16 When the even was come, they brought unto him many that were possessed with devils: and he cast out the spirits with his word, and healed all that were sick:
17That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Isaiah the prophet, saying, Himself took our infirmities, and bare our sicknesses.
Jesus did these things to fulfill the prophecy of Isaiah, which said,
He took our infirmities and bare our sicknesses. [7]
18 Now when Jesus saw great multitudes about him, he gave commandment to depart unto the other side.
19 And a certain scribe came, and said unto him, Master, I will follow thee whithersoever thou goest.
Master, I will follow you wherever you go.
20 And Jesus saith unto him, The foxes have holes, and the birds of the air have nests; but the Son of man hath not where to lay his head.
Foxes have holes and birds have nests, but the Son of man has nowhere to lay his head. [8]
21And another of his disciples said unto him, Lord, suffer me first to go and bury my father.
Lord, let me first go and bury my father.
22But Jesus said unto him, Follow me; and let the dead bury their dead.
Follow me, and let the dead bury their dead. [9]
23 And when he was entered into a ship, his disciples followed him.
24 And, behold, there arose a great tempest in the sea, insomuch that the ship was covered with the waves: but he was asleep.
But Jesus was asleep.
25And his disciples came to him, and awoke him, saying, Lord, save us: we perish.
Lord, save us or we'll die.
26And he saith unto them, Why are ye fearful, O ye of little faith? Then he arose, and rebuked the winds and the sea; and there was a great calm.
Why are you afraid? You don't have much faith. Then he got up and rebuked the winds and the sea, and there was a great calm.
27 But the men marvelled, saying, What manner of man is this, that even the winds and the sea obey him!
His disciples marveled, saying,
What kind of man is this, that even the wind and sea obey him? [10]
28 And when he was come to the other side into the country of the Gergesenes, there met him two possessed with devils, coming out of the tombs, exceeding fierce, so that no man might pass by that way.
They came out of tombs and were extremely fierce, so that no one passed that way.
29And, behold, they cried out, saying, What have we to do with thee, Jesus, thou Son of God? art thou come hither to torment us before the time?
What do we have to do with you, Jesus, the Son of God? [12]Have you come here to torment us before our time?
30 And there was a good way off from them an herd of many swine feeding.
31 So the devils besought him, saying, If thou cast us out, suffer us to go away into the herd of swine.
If you're going to cast us out, let us go into the herd of swine.
32And he said unto them, Go. And when they were come out, they went into the herd of swine: and, behold, the whole herd of swine ran violently down a steep place into the sea, and perished in the waters.
And the devils went into the pigs, who ran over a cliff and drowned in the sea below. [13]
33 And they that kept them fled, and went their ways into the city, and told every thing, and what was befallen to the possessed of the devils.
34And, behold, the whole city came out to meet Jesus: and when they saw him, they besought him that he would depart out of their coasts.
It is strange that Jesus told the man not to tell anyone, since "great multitudes" were present who must have witnessed the event.
Jesus is approached by a centurion who asks him to heal his servant (slave). But when the same story is told in Luke (7:1-7), the centurion doesn't come himself but sends some "elders of the Jews."
This was the perfect opportunity for Jesus to condemn slavery. All he'd have to do is say, "OK, I'll heal him. But then you must set your slave free, because slavery is an abomination to God."
What was the relationship between the centurion and his slave? Were they a gay couple? If so, Jesus didn't seem to mind.
When Jesus refers to "the children of heaven" here he means the Jews.
Peter's mother-in-law was sick with a fever. Jesus healed her by touching her hand, so she could get back to serving them.
(Peter's mother-in-law? The first pope was married?)
Did Jesus heal Peter's mother in law before or after calling Peter?
This is from Isaiah 53:4. But the context shows that the quote from Isaiah refers to the nation of Israel as God's servant, not Jesus. See Isaiah 41:8-10; 44:1, 21; 49:3 in which the servant is explicitly called Israel.
In this verse Jesus claims to be homeless, but according to Mark (2:15) he had his own house in Capernaum -- which is where he supposedly is at the time. So why didn't he just go there?
Jesus shows his family values by telling a man who had just lost his father and would like to bury him: "Follow me, and let the dead bury the dead."
The disciples are surprised that Jesus can calm a storm, even though they just saw him cast out devils and heal the sick.
Is it harder to calm a storm than cast out devils?
The devils confess that Jesus is the Son of God.
So according to 1 John 4:15, God dwells in the devils and the devils in God.
Why did Jesus listen to and obey the devils? Couldn't he have found a way to cast out the devils without causing a whole herd of pigs to drown?
Can you blame them? Jesus had just killed a herd of pigs, without compensating their owner. This would have destroyed the livelihood of the owner and caused a loss of revenue for the entire region.
