The children of the kingdom shall be cast out into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth. 8:12

Trivia: What did Jesus say about a man who looks at a woman with lust?

Matthew

CHAPTER 15

The Pharisees criticize Jesus's disciples
(for not washing their hands before eating)

15:1-2, Cf. Mk 7:1-5, Lk 11:37-54

1 Then came to Jesus scribes and Pharisees, which were of Jerusalem, saying,

2 Why do thy disciples transgress the tradition of the elders? for they wash not their hands when they eat bread.

The scribes and Pharisees said to Jesus,
Why do your disciples break the tradition of the elders by not washing their hands before eating?
Jesus criticizes the Pharisees
(for not killing disobedient children)
15:3-9, Cf. Mk 7:6-13

3But he answered and said unto them, Why do ye also transgress the commandment of God by your tradition?

4 For God commanded, saying, Honour thy father and mother: and, He that curseth father or mother, let him die the death.

Jesus replied,
Why do you break God's commandment by not killing children who curse their parents? [1]

5But ye say, Whosoever shall say to his father or his mother, It is a gift, by whatsoever thou mightest be profited by me;

6 And honour not his father or his mother, he shall be free. Thus have ye made the commandment of God of none effect by your tradition.

But you say, "Whoever doesn't honor his father or mother shall be set free."

Thus, you have nullified God's commandment by your tradition.

7Ye hypocrites, well did Isaiah prophesy of you, saying,

8 This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with their lips; but their heart is far from me.

9 But in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.

You hypocrites! Isaiah [2] spoke of you when he said,
These people say nice things about me, but their heart is far from me.

It is useless for them to worship me, since they teach the doctrines of men.

Things that defile a person
15:10-20, Cf. Mk 7:14-23

10 And he called the multitude, and said unto them, Hear, and understand:

11Not that which goeth into the mouth defileth a man; but that which cometh out of the mouth, this defileth a man.

Jesus called a crowd of people together, and said to them,
A person is defiled by what comes out of the mouth; not by what goes into it. [3]

12 Then came his disciples, and said unto him, Knowest thou that the Pharisees were offended, after they heard this saying?

The disciples said to Jesus,
Don't you know that the Pharisees were offended by what you said?

13 But he answered and said, Every plant, which my heavenly Father hath not planted, shall be rooted up.

14 Let them alone: they be blind leaders of the blind. And if the blind lead the blind, both shall fall into the ditch.

Jesus answered,
Every plant that God hasn't planted will be pulled up.

Don't worry about what they say. They are the blind leading the blind. And if the blind lead the blind, they will both fall into the ditch.

15 Then answered Peter and said unto him, Declare unto us this parable.

Peter said to him,
Explain that parable to us.

16 And Jesus said, Are ye also yet without understanding?

17 Do not ye yet understand, that whatsoever entereth in at the mouth goeth into the belly, and is cast out into the draught?

18 But those things which proceed out of the mouth come forth from the heart; and they defile the man.

Jesus said,
Don't you understand?

What goes in the mouth, goes into the belly, and out of the body.

But what comes out of the mouth comes from the heart. These are the things that defile a person.

19 For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies:

For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, theft, lies, and blasphemies.

20 These are the things which defile a man: but to eat with unwashen hands defileth not a man.

These are the things that defile a person; but to eat with unwashed hands doesn't defile anyone.
Jesus removes a devil from a Canaanite woman's daughter (after calling her a dog)
15:21-28, Cf. Mk 7:24-30

21Then Jesus went thence, and departed into the coasts of Tyre and Sidon.

22 And, behold, a woman of Canaan came out of the same coasts, and cried unto him, saying, Have mercy on me, O Lord, thou son of David; my daughter is grievously vexed with a devil.

Then Jesus went to the coasts of Tyre and Sidon. [4]

And a Canaanite woman cried out to him,

Have mercy on me, O Lord, son of David.

My daughter is possessed by a devil.

23But he answered her not a word. And his disciples came and besought him, saying, Send her away; for she crieth after us.

But Jesus didn't answer her.

His disciples came to him and said,

Send her away, because she is shouting at us.

24 But he answered and said, I am not sent but unto the lost sheep of the house of Israel.

Jesus said,
I have only been sent to the lost sheep of Israel. [5]

25Then came she and worshipped him, saying, Lord, help me.

Then she came and worshiped him, saying,
Lord help me.

26But he answered and said, It is not meet to take the children's bread, and to cast it to dogs.

But Jesus said to her,
It's not right to take the children's bread and give it to dogs.

27And she said, Truth, Lord: yet the dogs eat of the crumbs which fall from their masters' table.

She replied,
Yes, but dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their masters' table. [6]

28Then Jesus answered and said unto her, O woman, great is thy faith: be it unto thee even as thou wilt. And her daughter was made whole from that very hour.

Jesus said to her,
O woman, you have great faith. Let it be done to you as you wanted.

And the devil left her daughter at that hour.

Jesus feeds four thousand men
15:29-39, Cf. Mk 8:1-10

29 And Jesus departed from thence, and came nigh unto the sea of Galilee; and went up into a mountain, and sat down there.

Jesus went up on a mountain next to the Sea of Galilee.

30 And great multitudes came unto him, having with them those that were lame, blind, dumb, maimed, and many others, and cast them down at Jesus' feet; and he healed them:

A great crowd came to him, with many lame, blind, mute, and maimed.

Jesus healed them all.

31 Insomuch that the multitude wondered, when they saw the dumb to speak, the maimed to be whole, the lame to walk, and the blind to see: and they glorified the God of Israel.

Everyone in the crowd saw Jesus's miraculous cures and glorified God.

32 Then Jesus called his disciples unto him, and said, I have compassion on the multitude, because they continue with me now three days, and have nothing to eat: and I will not send them away fasting, lest they faint in the way.

Jesus called his disciples and said,
I feel sorry for the crowd. They've been following me for three days and have had nothing to eat.

I won't send them away fasting, for they will faint along the way.

33And his disciples say unto him, Whence should we have so much bread in the wilderness, as to fill so great a multitude?

His disciples said,
Where will we get enough food to feed such a large crowd? [7]

34 And Jesus saith unto them, How many loaves have ye? And they said, Seven, and a few little fishes.

Jesus asked them, "How many loaves of bread to you have?"

They answered, "Seven, and a few little fishes."

35 And he commanded the multitude to sit down on the ground.

Jesus told the crowd to sit down on the ground.

36 And he took the seven loaves and the fishes, and gave thanks, and brake them, and gave to his disciples, and the disciples to the multitude.

And he took the seven loaves and fishes, gave thanks, and gave them to his disciples to distribute to the crowd.

37And they did all eat, and were filled: and they took up of the broken meat that was left seven baskets full.

Everyone ate and was filled.

And the disciples collected seven baskets of leftovers.

38 And they that did eat were four thousand men, beside women and children.

Four thousand men were fed, not counting the women and children.

39 And he sent away the multitude, and took ship, and came into the coasts of Magdala.

Then Jesus sent away the crowd, and took a boat to Magdala.
