CHAPTER 16

Jesus rises from the dead

1 And when the sabbath was past, Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James, and Salome, had bought sweet spices, that they might come and anoint him.

When sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome brought spices to anoint Jesus's body. [1]

2 And very early in the morning the first day of the week, they came unto the sepulchre at the rising of the sun.

They came to the sepuchre at dawn on the first day of the week. [2]

3 And they said among themselves, Who shall roll us away the stone from the door of the sepulchre?

They said to themselves,

Who will roll away the stone for us?

4 And when they looked, they saw that the stone was rolled away: for it was very great.

But when they looked, they saw that the stone was already rolled away. [3]

5 And entering into the sepulchre, they saw a young man sitting on the right side, clothed in a longwhite garment; and they were affrighted.

When they entered the sepulchre, they saw a young man sitting on the right side, clothed in a long white garment. [4]

And they were afraid.

6 And he saith unto them, Be not affrighted: Ye seek Jesus of Nazareth, which was crucified: he is risen; he is not here: behold the place where they laid him.

7 But go your way, tell his disciples and Peter that he goeth before you into Galilee: there shall ye see him, as he said unto you.

The young man said,

Don't be afaid.

You're looking for Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified.

He is risen. He's not here. Look where they laid him. [5]

Go tell his disciples that he'll meet them in Galilee. [6]

8And they went out quickly, and fled from the sepulchre; for they trembled and were amazed: neither said they any thing to any man; for they were afraid.

The women were amazed and ran out of the sepulchre.

They didn't say anything to anyone because they were afraid. [7]

The disciples don't believe Mary Magdalene
16:9-11

9 Now when Jesus was risen early the first day of the week, he appeared first to Mary Magdalene, out of whom he had cast seven devils.

After Jesus rose from the dead on the first day of the week, he appeared first to Mary Magdalene, out of which he had cast seven devils. [8]

10 And she went and told them that had been with him, as they mourned and wept.

She went and told Jesus's friends, who were mourning and weeping.

11 And they, when they had heard that he was alive, and had been seen of her, believed not.

But they didn't believe her.

Jesus appears to two disciples, but the others don't believe them
16:12-13, Cf. Luke 24:13-32

12After that he appeared in another form unto two of them, as they walked, and went into the country.

Later Jesus appeared in another form to two of his disciples, as they walked in the country.

13And they went and told it unto the residue: neither believed they them.

They went to tell the others, but they didn't believe them either. [9]

Jesus: Nonbelievers are damned, believers will handle snakes and drink poisons
16:14-18

14 Afterward he appeared unto the eleven as they sat at meat, and upbraided them with their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they believed not them which had seen him after he was risen.

After that, Jesus appeared to the eleven while they were eating, and he scolded them for not believing the others who said he had risen. [10]

15 And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.

He said to them,

Go and preach the gospel to every creature. [11]

16 He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.

Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved,

whoever doesn't believe will be damned. [12]

17And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues;

18They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.

These are the signs that will follow believers: They will

cast out devils in my name,

speak in new tongues,

handle serpents,

drink poisons without harm,

and heal sick people by laying hands on them. [13]

Jesus goes to heaven
16:19-20, Cf. Luke 24:50-53

19 So then after the Lord had spoken unto them, he was received up into heaven, and sat on the right hand of God.

After Jesus said these things, he went to heaven and sat on the right hand of God. [14]

20 And they went forth, and preached every where, the Lord working with them, and confirming the word with signs following. Amen.

His disciples preached everywhere, with Jesus working with them performing signs. [15]

Amen.
