CHAPTER 1

John the Baptist

1 The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God;

This is the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. [1]

2As it is written in the prophets, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, which shall prepare thy way before thee.

3 The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.

As the prophets wrote,

I'll send my messenger before you to prepare your way. [2]

4John did baptize in the wilderness, and preach the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins.

John baptized people to forgive their sins. [3]

5 And there went out unto him all the land of Judea, and they of Jerusalem, and were all baptized of him in the river of Jordan, confessing their sins.

And everyone in the land of Judea was baptized by John in the Jordan River. [4]

6 And John was clothed with camel's hair, and with a girdle of a skin about his loins; and he did eat locusts and wild honey;

John's clothes were made of camel hair,

he wore a girdle around his loins,

and he ate locusts and honey.

7 And preached, saying, There cometh one mightier than I after me, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to stoop down and unloose.

He preached, saying,

Someone is coming who's stronger than I am.

I'm not worthy to untie his shoes.

8 I indeed have baptized you with water: but he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost.

I baptize you with water,

but he'll baptize with the Holy Ghost.

The baptism of Jesus

9 And it came to pass in those days, that Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee, and was baptized of John in Jordan.

One day Jesus came from Nazareth to be baptized by John.

10And straightway coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens opened, and the Spirit like a dove descending upon him:

As soon as Jesus came up out of the water the Spirit descended upon him like a dove.

11And there came a voice from heaven, saying, Thou art my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.

And a voice came from heaven, saying,

You are my beloved son, in whom I am well pleased. [5]

Jesus is tempted by Satan

12 And immediately the spirit driveth him into the wilderness.

Immediately after this, the spirit drove him into the wilderness, [6]

13And he was there in the wilderness forty days, tempted of Satan; and was with the wild beasts; and the angels ministered unto him.

where he was tempted by Satan for forty days,

with wild beasts, while the angels cared for him.

Jesus calls his first disciples
1:14-22, Cf. Mt 4:12-25, Lk 5:10-

14 Now after that John was put in prison, Jesus came into Galilee, preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God,

After John the Baptist was put in prison,

Jesus came to Galilee and began to preach, saying,

15 And saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel.

The end is here, God's kingdom is coming.

Repent and believe the gospel.

16 Now as he walked by the sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and Andrew his brother casting a net into the sea: for they were fishers.

As he walked by the sea of Galilee,

Jesus saw Simon and his brother Andrew fishing. [7]

17And Jesus said unto them, Come ye after me, and I will make you to become fishers of men.

Jesus said to them,

Follow me and I'll make you fishers of men.

18 And straightway they forsook their nets, and followed him.

And immediately they dropped their nets and followed Jesus.

19 And when he had gone a little farther thence, he saw James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, who also were in the ship mending their nets.

After walking a little further, he saw James the son of Zebedee and his brother John, who were mending their nets.

20 And straightway he called them: and they left their father Zebedee in the ship with the hired servants, and went after him.

Jesus called to them,

and they left their father to follow him.

21 And they went into Capernaum; and straightway on the sabbath day he entered into the synagogue, and taught.

On the sabbath day, they went to a synagogue in Capernaum, where Jesus taught. [8]

22 And they were astonished at his doctrine: for he taught them as one that had authority, and not as the scribes.

Everyone was impressed with his teaching.

A man with an unclean spirit
1:23-28, Cf. Lk 4:31-37

23 And there was in their synagogue a man with an unclean spirit; and he cried out,

There was a man in the synagogue with an unclean spirit, who cried out,

24Saying, Let us alone; what have we to do with thee, thou Jesus of Nazareth? art thou come to destroy us? I know thee who thou art, the Holy One of God.

Leave us alone, Jesus of Nazareth.

I know who you are.

You are the Holy One of God. [9]

25 And Jesus rebuked him, saying, Hold thy peace, and come out of him.

Jesus said,

Be quiet and come out of him.

26 And when the unclean spirit had torn him, and cried with a loud voice, he came out of him.

The unclean spirit came out of the man,

crying out with a loud voice.

27 And they were all amazed, insomuch that they questioned among themselves, saying, What thing is this? what new doctrine is this? for with authority commandeth he even the unclean spirits, and they do obey him.

Everyone was amazed, and said,

Even unclean spirits obey him!

28 And immediately his fame spread abroad throughout all the region round about Galilee.

And immediately, Jesus became famous thoughout Galilee.

Simon's mother-in-law
1:29-31, Cf. Mt 8:14-15, Lk 4:38-41

29And forthwith, when they were come out of the synagogue, they entered into the house of Simon and Andrew, with James and John.

After leaving the synagogue, Jesus and his companions went to the house of Simon and Andrew.

30 But Simon's wife's mother lay sick of a fever, and anon they tell him of her.

Simon's mother-in-law [10] was sick with a fever.

31 And he came and took her by the hand, and lifted her up; and immediately the fever left her, and she ministered unto them.

Jesus took her hand and the fever left her.

Immediately she began to serve them.

Jesus casts out devils and heals the sick
1:32-39, Cf. Mt 8:16-17, Lk 4:40-41

32 And at even, when the sun did set, they brought unto him all that were diseased, and them that were possessed with devils.

33 And all the city was gathered together at the door.

Later that evening, everyone in the city gathered at the door of Simon's house, including those who were sick or possessed with devils.

34And he healed many that were sick of divers diseases, and cast out many devils; and suffered not the devils to speak, because they knew him.

Jesus healed many of the sick and cast out many devils,

telling the devils not to speak, because they all knew him.

35 And in the morning, rising up a great while before day, he went out, and departed into a solitary place, and there prayed.

The next morning, Jesus went out alone to pray.

36 And Simon and they that were with him followed after him.

37 And when they had found him, they said unto him, All men seek for thee.

Simon and the others followed after him.

When they found him, they said,

Everyone is looking for you.

38 And he said unto them, Let us go into the next towns, that I may preach there also: for therefore came I forth.

Jesus said,

Let's go to the towns so I can preach to them.

39And he preached in their synagogues throughout all Galilee, and cast out devils.

And he preached in the synagogues of Galilee and cast out devils.

Jesus cleans a leper
1:40-45, Cf. Mt 8:1-4, Lk 5:12-14

40 And there came a leper to him, beseeching him, and kneeling down to him, and saying unto him, If thou wilt, thou canst make me clean.

A man with leprosy came to Jesus and said to him,

If you want to, you can make me clean.

41 And Jesus, moved with compassion, put forth his hand, and touched him, and saith unto him, I will; be thou clean.

Jesus was moved with compassion [11] and said to him,

I want to. Be clean.

42 And as soon as he had spoken, immediately the leprosy departed from him, and he was cleansed.

And immediately, the leprosy left the man and he was clean.

43 And he straitly charged him, and forthwith sent him away;

44 And saith unto him, See thou say nothing to any man: but go thy way, shew thyself to the priest, and offer for thy cleansing those things which Moses commanded, for a testimony unto them.

Jesus said to him,

Don't say anything to anyone about this.

45 But he went out, and began to publish it much, and to blaze abroad the matter, insomuch that Jesus could no more openly enter into the city, but was without in desert places: and they came to him from every quarter.

But the man told everyone about it anyway.

And people came from all around to see Jesus.

Mark 1:9 - It's odd to think that the savior of all mankind, current and future, would need to be baptized. According to some apologetics sources, Jesus was baptized as a ceremonial gesture, marking the beginning of his ministry and symbolically "washing" himself so that he could be accepted by the Holy Spirit.

Jesus was just going through the motions because he was waiting for the cleaning staff to get his room ready up there in Heaven.
