21:1-71 After these things Jesus shewed himself again to the disciples at the sea of Tiberias; and on this wise shewed he himself.
After these things, Jesus appeared to his disciples on the Sea of Tiberias. [1]
2 There were together Simon Peter, and Thomas called Didymus, and Nathanael of Cana in Galilee, and the sons of Zebedee, and two other of his disciples.
Peter, Thomas, Nathanael, and the sons of Zebedee had gone fishing.
3 Simon Peter saith unto them, I go a fishing. They say unto him, We also go with thee. They went forth, and entered into a ship immediately; and that night they caught nothing.
But after fishing all night they didn't catch anything.
4 But when the morning was now come, Jesus stood on the shore: but the disciples knew not that it was Jesus.
Later that morning, Jesus stood on the shore, but the disciples didn't recognize him.
5 Then Jesus saith unto them, Children, have ye any meat? They answered him, No.
Jesus called out to them, saying, "Hey children, do you have any meat?"
6 And he said unto them, Cast the net on the right side of the ship, and ye shall find. They cast therefore, and now they were not able to draw it for the multitude of fishes.
They said to him, "No."
Jesus said, "Cast your net on the right side and you'll catch fish."
So they did that and caught so many fish they couldn't bring in the net.
7 Therefore that disciple whom Jesus loved saith unto Peter, It is the Lord. Now when Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he girt his fisher's coat unto him, (for he was naked) and did cast himself into the sea.
The disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, "It's the Lord."
When Peter heard him say that, he put on his coat and jumped in the water. (Because he was naked.) [2]
21:8-148 And the other disciples came in a little ship; (for they were not far from land, but as it were two hundred cubits,) dragging the net with fishes.
The other disciples came in another boat and helped them bring in all the fish.
9 As soon then as they were come to land, they saw a fire of coals there, and fish laid thereon, and bread.
When they got to shore, they saw a fire cooking fish and bread.
10 Jesus saith unto them, Bring of the fish which ye have now caught.
Jesus said, "Bring the fish that you caught."
11 Simon Peter went up, and drew the net to land full of great fishes, an hundred and fifty and three: and for all there were so many, yet was not the net broken.
Peter brought them over.
There were a total of 153 big fish in the net.
12 Jesus saith unto them, Come and dine. And none of the disciples durst ask him, Who art thou? knowing that it was the Lord.
13 Jesus then cometh, and taketh bread, and giveth them, and fish likewise.
14 This is now the third time that Jesus shewed himself to his disciples, after that he was risen from the dead.
Jesus said, "Come and eat."
None of the disciples asked him, "Who are you?",
since they knew he was Jesus.
21:15-1715 So when they had dined, Jesus saith to Simon Peter, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me more than these? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love thee. He saith unto him, Feed my lambs.
16 He saith to him again the second time, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love thee. He saith unto him, Feed my sheep.
17 He saith unto him the third time, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me? Peter was grieved because he said unto him the third time, Lovest thou me? And he said unto him, Lord, thou knowest all things; thou knowest that I love thee. Jesus saith unto him, Feed my sheep.
After they ate, Jesus said to Peter,
"Simon, son of Jonas, do you love me more than the others?"
Peter said, "Yes, Lord. You know I love you."
Jesus said, "Feed my lambs."
Again Jesus said to Peter,
"Simon, son of Jonas, do you love me?"
Peter said, "Yes, Lord. You know I love you."
Jesus said, "Feed my sheep."
A third time Jesus said to Peter,
"Simon, son of Jonas, do you love me?"
Peter, who was sad that he asked the same thing three times, said, "Yes, Lord. You know everything. So you know I love you." [3]
Jesus said, "Feed my sheep."
21:18-2518 Verily, verily, I say unto thee, When thou wast young, thou girdest thyself, and walkedst whither thou wouldest: but when thou shalt be old, thou shalt stretch forth thy hands, and another shall gird thee, and carry thee whither thou wouldest not.
Jesus said,
When you were young, you did whatever you wanted to do.
When you are old, someone will lead you where you'd rather not go.
19 This spake he, signifying by what death he should glorify God. And when he had spoken this, he saith unto him, Follow me.
(Jesus said this to indicate how Peter would die.)
Then Jesus said to him, "Follow me."
20 Then Peter, turning about, seeth the disciple whom Jesus loved following; which also leaned on his breast at supper, and said, Lord, which is he that betrayeth thee?
21 Peter seeing him saith to Jesus, Lord, and what shall this man do?
Peter asked Jesus about the disciple whom Jesus loved (the one who leaned on Jesus's breast at supper), [4] saying,
What will this man do?
22 Jesus saith unto him, If I will that he tarry till I come, what is that to thee? follow thou me.
23 Then went this saying abroad among the brethren, that that disciple should not die: yet Jesus said not unto him, He shall not die; but, If I will that he tarry till I come, what is that to thee?
Jesus said,
If he lives until I come back, what is that to you? [5]
Follow me.
(Jesus was saying that his beloved disciple wouldn't die, but will still be living when he comes back.)
24 This is the disciple which testifieth of these things, and wrote these things: and we know that his testimony is true.
This is the disciple who talked and wrote these things, and we know what he said is true.
25 And there are also many other things which Jesus did, the which, if they should be written every one, I suppose that even the world itself could not contain the books that should be written. Amen.
Jesus did many other things, which, if they were written in books, would fill the entire earth. [6]
One night Peter and the apostles decided to go fishing. They fished all night but caught nothing. The next morning a man on shore asked if they'd caught anything. When they told him they hadn't, the man told them to cast their net on the right side of the boat. So they did that and caught so many fish they couldn't haul in the net (153 in all).
One of the apostles (the one that Jesus loved) decided that the guy on shore was really Jesus. When Peter, who was naked at the time, heard it was Jesus, he put his coat on and jumped into the water. Some other apostles came out in another boat and helped tow the net to shore. When they got in, Jesus was busy cooking fish over a fire. He told them to eat some of the fish and bread he'd been cooking. None of the disciples dared to ask Jesus who he was, but they all figured it was Jesus, anyway.
Jesus implies that he will return to earth during the lifetime of John.
Either way, Jesus was wrong. John died nearly 2000 years ago and Jesus didn't return.
A single book couldn't contain all the things that Jesus did. Yet the author of Acts claims that he included everything that Jesus did in his "former treatise" (the gospel of Luke).
