The word 'fear' is manipulated to help give God a better image. When asked about whether people should really be 'fearing' God, a pastor on a particular Christian television show said that the word 'fear' should be interpreted as "intense respect" (for God). So, by his definition, a "god-fearing" person simply has utmost respect for God. This seems to be in contradiction with the Book of John, which uses 'fear' in the traditional sense of the word.
