0 What The Bible says about Satan

All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness. 2 Timothy 3:16

Satan

The first occurrence of the word "Satan" in the King James Version of the Bible is in 1 Chronicles, where Satan inspired David to have a census. (According to 2 Samuel, God tempted David to do the census.)

And Satan stood up against Israel, and provoked David to number Israel. 1 Chronicles 21:1

DWB: God killed 70,000 because David had a census that God (or Satan) told him to do.

Satan next shows up in the book of Job, where he and God have a wager about Job.

Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan came also among them to present himself before the LORD... Job 1:6

And he is mentioned in the Psalms.

Set thou a wicked man over him: and let Satan stand at his right hand. Psalm 109:6

Zechariah had a vision of Joshua with Satan at his side.

And he shewed me Joshua the high priest standing before the angel of the LORD, and Satan standing at his right hand to resist him. And the LORD said unto Satan, The LORD rebuke thee, O Satan; even the LORD that hath chosen Jerusalem rebuke thee: is not this a brand plucked out of the fire? Zechariah 3:1-2

Unlike the Hebrew Scriptures, where Satan plays only a minor role, he shows up often in the New Testament, where his is often also referred to as the devil.

He tempted Jesus in the wilderness.

Then was Jesus led up of the spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil. ... Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan. Matthew 4:1-11

And he was there in the wilderness forty days, tempted of Satan. Mark 1:13

Being forty days tempted of the devil. ... And Jesus answered and said unto him, Get thee behind me, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve. Luke 4:1-8

He was accused by the Pharisees of casting out devils with the power of the prince of devils.

When the Pharisees heard it, they said, This fellow doth not cast out devils, but by Beelzebub the prince of the devils.

And if Satan cast out Satan, he is divided against himself; how shall then his kingdom stand? Matthew 12:24-16

some of them said, He casteth out devils through Beelzebub the chief of the devils. ... If Satan also be divided against himself, how shall his kingdom stand? because ye say that I cast out devils through Beelzebub. Luke 11:14-20

Jesus called Peter "Satan" for saying that Jesus would not suffer and die.

But he turned, and said unto Peter, Get thee behind me, Satan: thou art an offence unto me: for thou savourest not the things that be of God, but those that be of men. Matthew 16:23

But when he had turned about and looked on his disciples, he rebuked Peter, saying, Get thee behind me, Satan: for thou savourest not the things that be of God, but the things that be of men. Mark 8:33

In the parable of the sower, Satan takes away the seed that is planted in people's hearts.

And these are they by the way side, where the word is sown; but when they have heard, Satan cometh immediately, and taketh away the word that was sown in their hearts. Mark 4:15

Jesus told his disciples that he saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven. (This was just before he told them they could walk on snakes and scorpions without being hurt.)

And he said unto them, I beheld Satan as lightning fall from heaven. Luke 10:18

Jesus believed that Satan had bound a woman for 18 years.

And ought not this woman, being a daughter of Abraham, whom Satan hath bound, lo, these eighteen years, be loosed from this bond on the sabbath day? Luke 13:10-18

Satan entered Judas before (or after) the last supper to make him betray Jesus.

Then entered Satan into Judas surnamed Iscariot .... Then came the day of unleavened bread, when the passover must be killed. Luke 22:3-21

And after the sop Satan entered into him. Then said Jesus unto him, That thou doest, do quickly. John 13:27

When did Satan enter Judas?

Satan caused Ananias to lie to the Holy Ghost. (So God killed him.)

But Peter said, Ananias, why hath Satan filled thine heart to lie to the Holy Ghost, and to keep back part of the price of the land? Acts 5:1-11

Nonbelievers are blind and are controlled by Satan.

To open their eyes, and to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan unto God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins, and inheritance among them which are sanctified by faith that is in me. Acts 26:18

The God of peace will soon bruise Satan under believers' feet.

And the God of peace shall bruise Satan under your feet shortly. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. Amen. Romans 16:20

Paul delivered some people to Satan (to save them and teach them not to blaspheme).

To deliver such an one unto Satan for the destruction of the flesh, that the spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus. 1 Corinthians 5:1

Of whom is Hymenaeus and Alexander; whom I have delivered unto Satan, that they may learn not to blaspheme. 1 Timothy 1:20

Married couples should have sex now and then so they won't be tempted by Satan.

Defraud ye not one the other, except it be with consent for a time, that ye may give yourselves to fasting and prayer; and come together again, that Satan tempt you not for your incontinency. 1 Corinthians 7:5

Forgive people for the things they've done - so Satan won't take advantage of you.

To whom ye forgive any thing, I forgive also: ... Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices. 2 Corinthians 2:10-11

Satan has transformed himself into an angel of light.

And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light. 2 Corinthians 11:14

God gave Paul a thorn in the flesh, a messenger of Satan, to humble him.

And lest I should be exalted above measure through the abundance of the revelations, there was given to me a thorn in the flesh, the messenger of Satan to buffet me, lest I should be exalted above measure. 2 Corinthians 12:7

Paul would have come visit the Thessalonians, but Satan wouldn't let him.

Wherefore we would have come unto you, even I Paul, once and again; but Satan hindered us. 1 Thessalonians 2:18

Jesus will return after Satan has finished doing all his signs and wonders.

Even him, whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders, 2 Thessalonians 2:9

Paul (or whoever wrote 1 Timothy) says young women should marry and have children - because some of them have already turned aside after Satan.

I will therefore that the younger women marry, bear children ... For some are already turned aside after Satan. 1 Timothy 5:14-15

Jews belong to the synagogue of Satan.

I know the blasphemy of them which say they are Jews, and are not, but are the synagogue of Satan. Revelation 2:9

Behold, I will make them of the synagogue of Satan, which say they are Jews, and are not, but do lie. Revelation 3:9

John of Patmos knows where Satan's seat is. (But he's not telling.)

I know ... where Satan's seat is. Revelation 2:13

Someday God will kick Satan (that great dragon) and his devils out of heaven and send them to earth.

And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him. Revelation 12:9

Then God will tie Satan up for 1000 years.

And he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the Devil, and Satan, and bound him a thousand years, And cast him into the bottomless pit, and shut him up. Revelation 20:2-3

When Satan's 1000 year sentence has been served, God will release him from prison so hie can deceived the nations.

And when the thousand years are expired, Satan shall be loosed out of his prison. And shall go out to deceive the nations. Revelation 20:7-8
