0 Moses's speech (Dt 1-5)

Episode 70: Moses's speech

(Deuteronomy 1-5)

1 1-4 This is what Moses said to the Israelites on the east side of the Jordan River forty years after God killed Sihon the king of the Amorites and Og the king of Bashan:

10 God has multiplied you so that now there are as many of you as there are stars in heaven.

11 (God will make you a thousand times as numerous as the stars!)

19 God has given you the land that is before you. Go possess it. Don't be afraid

2 9 When we passed through the wilderness of Moab, God said to me,

9 Don't fight with the Moabites, because I gave their land to Lot's children.

10-11 The Emim used to live there, who were as tall as the Anakim, and were called giants.

14 In the next 38 years or so, God killed all the Israelite soldiers, as he swore he'd do to them.

16 After God killed all of our soldiers, he said to me,

19 Don't bother the Ammonites, because I have given their land to Lot's children.

20 The land of the Ammonites was also a land of giants. But God destroyed them.

30 But Sihon wouldn't let us pass, because God had hardened his heart, so that he could deliver him into our hand. 32-33 So he fought against us, and we killed him, his sons, and all of his people. 34 We killed everyone: men, women, children, and babies in every city. We left no one alive.

37 But we didn't kill the Ammonites or any other group of people that God forbid us to kill.

3 1 Then we went to Bashan, and Og fought against us.

And God said,

2 Don't be afraid of him. I'll deliver him into your hand, and you'll kill him and all of his people, just like you did to Sihon and the Amorites.

6 God delivered Og into our hands and we killed every man, woman, and child in sixty cities.

11-13 (Og was the king of Bashan, the land of the giants. His bed was 9 cubits long and four cubits wide.)

21 I said to Joshua,

You've seen all that God did to these two kings (Sihon and Og).

He'll do the same to all the kingdoms that you pass through.

22 So don't be afraid, because God will fight for you.

26 But God was mad at me because of you. He said to me,

27 Go up to the top of Pisgah and look west, north, south , and east. Because you're not going over the Jordan.

28 But encourage Joshua. He's going to inherit the land that you will see.

4 1 Don't add to, or take away from, the commands that I have given you.

16-18 Take heed not to make any graven image of anything -- the likeness of a man or a woman, beast or fowl, creeping thing or fish. 24 Because God is a consuming fire, a jealous God.

Cities of refuge

41 Moses established three cities of refuge. 42 These cities were safe places for accidental killers.
