Go west to the New Jerusalem (44-48)

Episode 88: Go west to the New Jerusalem (or Zion)

Doctrine and Covenants 44-48

Section 44

Revelation to Joseph Smith and Sidney Rigdon, Kirtland, Ohio, late February 1831

Let's have a meeting

1 I, the Lord, would like the elders to meet. So send out letters asking them to come. (Or invite them in some other way.) 5 So your enemies won't have power over you. 6 Take care of the poor. Amen.

Section 45

Revelation given through Joseph Smith to the Church, at Kirtland, Ohio, March 7, 1831.

I'm Jesus, listen to me

1 I'm Jesus. Listen to me.

The city of Enoch is out of this world

11 Listen to the God of Enoch. 12 Enoch had a city that was out of this world.

Jesus prophesies as in the days of old

15 So I will prophesy like an old-time prophet.

The day of the Lord

41 Before the day of the Lord comes, there will be smoke and fire. 42 The sun will darken, the moon will turn to blood, and the stars will fall from heaven. 44 Then I'll come in the clouds with all my glory. 45 Dead people will come to meet me in the cloud. 47 Then God's arm will fall on the nations. 48 The Lord will put his foot on the mountain and split it two, and the heavens and earth will shake. 49 Everyone will hear the Lord's voice. 50 And the mockers and scorners will burn in the fire. 51 The Jews will look at my wounds and say,” What are those wounds in your hands and feet?” 52 And I'll say to them, “I'm Jesus, the Son of God. These are the wounds of my crucifixion.” 53 Then they'll cry because they persecuted their king. 55 Satan will be tied up. 56 Then the parable about the ten virgins will be fulfilled.

And that's all I have to say about that (until the New Testament is translated)

60 And that's all I'm going to say about that, until the New Testament is translated. Then you'll know all about it. 61 So I'm giving it to you so you can translate it.

Go west to the New Jerusalem (or Zion)

63 Soon there will be wars in your own lands. 64 So go west. 66 It'll be called the New Jerusalem. 67 The glory and the terror of the Lord will be there. It'll be called Zion. 69 It will be the only place on earth where people won't be fighting with each other. 70 The wicked will say, "Let's don't fight against Zion. They are terrible." 71 The righteous will come to Zion. 74 When the Lord appears, he'll be terrible to them, so they'll tremble with fear. 75 Amen.

Section 46

Revelation given through Joseph Smith the Prophet to the Church, at Kirtland, Ohio, March 8, 1831

How to have a meeting

2 Conduct meetings under the direction of the Holy Spirit. 3 Allow everyone to attend. 5 Allow even those who don't belong to the church to attend your meetings. 7 But don't be seduced by evil spirits or devils.

Seek the best gifts

8 Seek the best gifts. 19 Some sick people have enough faith to be healed. 20 And others have enough faith to heal them. 21 Some can work miracles. 22 Others can prophesy. 23 Some understand spirits. 24 Speak in tongues. 25 Or understand what people who are speaking in tongues are saying. 33 Amen.

Section 47

Revelation given through Joseph Smith at Kirtland, Ohio, March 8, 1831

I'd like John Whitmer to write history

1 I'd like John to write history. 2 He can also talk at meetings. 3 Oliver Cowdery used to write the history, but I've given him other duties. 4 Amen.

Section 48

Revelation given through Joseph Smith at Kirtland, Ohio, March 10, 1831

Save your money to buy some land in the city (I'll tell you what city later)

1 Stay where you are for the time being. 2 If you own land, sell it. 3 If you don't own land, buy some that is nearby. Everyone needs a place to live. 4 Save your money so you can buy some land in the city. 5 I'll tell you what city later. 6 The president and bishop of the church will oversee the purchase the land for the city. Amen.
