Episode 86: The heaviest of all cursings

Doctrine and Covenants 38-41

Section 38

Revelation through Joseph Smith, Fayette, New York, at a church conference on January 2, 1831

Thus saith Jesus, the great I am

1 Thus says Jesus, the great I am: 5 “I've kept dead wicked people chained up in the darkness until the end of the earth. 6 Wo, wo, wo is their doom. 7 I see you, but you can't see me. 8 But soon you'll see me. And you'd better be purified when you do. 9 So gird up your loins. 11 All flesh is corrupted. 16 All flesh is mine. 17 The earth is my footstool, so I'm going to stand on it. 21 Someday I'll be your king. 22 Then you'll have no laws but mine. 28 You have a secret enemy who is trying to kill you.”

Here's a commandment for you: Go to Ohio

32 Here's a commandment for you: Go to Ohio. I'll give you my law and make you powerful. 33 From there, I'll tell the whole world what to do. Israel will be saved. No one can stop me.

Here's another commandment: Everyone must do whatever I say

34 Here's a commandment for the church: Certain men will be appointed by the church. 35 They'll take care of the poor and needy. 36 And they'll govern the property of the church.

Section 39

Revelation through Joseph Smith to James Covill Fayette, New York, January 5, 1831

Go to Ohio, James Covill

1 Listen to Jesus, the great I am. 7 I know you, James. 8 At this moment, your head is right, and I've blessed your head. 9 But you've rejected me many times before. 10 If you listen to me, get baptized, and call on my name, you'll receive a better blessing than you've ever had before. 11 And you will preach my gospel in these last days. 14 You're not called to go east; you're called to go to Ohio. 15 If my people go to Ohio, I'll bless them more than I've ever blessed anyone else.

19 So go cry with a loud voice, saying: "The kingdom of heaven is here." 21 The end is coming, but no one knows when it will come. 24 I come quickly. Amen.

Section 40

Revelation to Joseph Smith and Sidney Rigdon Fayette, New York, January 1831

Satan stole James Covill from Jesus

1 Things were good between me [Jesus] and James Covill. He said he'd obey me. 2 But Satan tempted him and he rejected the word. 3 So he broke our agreement. Now I have to decide what to do to him. Amen.

Section 41

The heaviest of all cursings

1 I'm God. If you listen to me, I'll give you the greatest blessing. If you don't, I'll give you the greatest cursing. 2 Here's a commandment for the church: Gather together and agree about my word. 4 I'll be your ruler when I come. And I come quickly. 5 Expel anyone who refuses to obey my law. 6 Don't give the things that belong to children to dogs or cast pearls before swine.
