Episode 115: The Son of God appears to a host of dead people (136-138)

Doctrine and Covenants

Section 136

The word and will of the Lord, given through President Brigham Young at on the west bank of the Missouri River, near Council Bluffs, Iowa

The Camp of Israel's westward journey

1 This is God's will concerning the Camp of Israel's westward journey. 17 Don't be afraid of your enemies. They won't be able to stop my work.

24 Stop getting drunk.

30 Don't be afraid of your enemies. They are in my hands, and I'll have my pleasure with them.

34 Your testimony has been rejected by the nation that has driven you out. Now they will pay for it with calamity and sorrow, unless they repent. 36 For they killed the prophets that were sent to them and have killed innocent people.

37 I called on Joseph Smith with my angels, and my own voice from the sky, to do my work for me. 38 Now he's here with me. 39 His death was necessary to seal his testimony with his blood, so he could be honored and the wicked condemned.

42 That's all for now. Amen and Amen.

Section 137

A vision given to Joseph Smith in the temple at Kirtland, Ohio, January 21, 1836

I saw the celestial kingdom, but I couldn't tell if I was in the body or out of it

1 The heavens opened and I [Joseph Smith] saw the celestial kingdom. I couldn't tell if I was in the body or out of the body. 2 The gate looked like it was on fire. 3 Both the Father and the Son were sitting on the same throne, which was blazing with fire. 4 The streets were paved with gold.

I saw Alvin Smith in the celestial kingdom

5 I saw Adam and Abraham - and also my own father and mother, along with my long-dead brother Alvin. 6 I was surprised to see Alvin, since he wasn't baptized, and died before the Lord gathered Israel for the second time.

7 Then the Lord said to me, “Those who died without knowing the gospel, but would have believed it if they had lived longer, will enter the celestial kingdom.” 8 This also be true from now on. 9 I'll judge everyone according to their works and wants.

10 I also saw that children who die before the age of accountability will be go to the celestial kingdom.

Section 138

A vision given to President Joseph F. Smith in Salt Lake City, Utah, on October 3, 1918

The Son of God appears to a host of dead people

1 On October 3, 1918, I [Joseph F. Smith] sat in my room pondering the scriptures. 11 As I pondered on these things, the spirit of the Lord rested on me, and I saw many dead people. 15 They were all happily waiting for the Son of God to enter the spirit world. 17 Their spirits and bodies were to be reunited.

18 Then, while the dead people were talking and waiting around, the Son of God appeared. 19 And he preached to them. 20 But he stayed away from the wicked, ungodly, and unrepentant, wo had deviled themselves in the flesh.

38-49 Among the dead people were Adam, Eve and her faithful daughters, Abel (the first martyr), Seth (who looked just like his father Adam), Noah, Shem, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and Moses, Isaiah, Ezekiel, Daniel, Elias, Malachi, Elijah, and the Nephite prophets.

53 Joseph Smith and my father, Hyrum Smith, Brigham Young, John Taylor, Wilford Woodruff, and others built temples where dead people can be baptized. 56 They learned things even before they were born in the spirit world.

57 And I saw elders preach to the spirits of the dead. 59 After the dead people are washed clean, they'll be rewarded for their works.

60 This was my revelation about the redemption of dead people. I know it's all true. Amen.
