The two priesthoods (105-107)

Episode 106: The two priesthoods (105-107)

Doctrine and Covenants

Section 105

Revelation given through Joseph Smith about four miles north of Fishing River in Clay County, Missouri, June 22, 1834

My people have been evil and disobedient

2 If it weren't for the transgressions of my people, they'd have been redeemed by now. 3 But they've been evil and disobedient and haven't shared with the poor. 4 And they're not united as required by the law of the celestial kingdom. 6 My people need to be chastened by suffering. 8 Members of my churches abroad say, “Where is God? We'll keep our money.”

Let my army become very great

14 I will fight your battles. 15 I've sent a destroyer to destroy my enemies. In a few years they won't be polluting my inheritance or blaspheming my name in the land I’ve given to my saints. 16 I've commanded Joseph Smith, Jr. to lead my young and middle-aged warriors to throw down the towers of my enemies and scatter their watchmen. 27 I will soften the hearts of the people, as I did the heart of Pharaoh, while Joseph Smith, Jun. gathers my army.

28 I've sent wise men to buy all the lands they can in Jackson County, and in the surrounding counties. 26 After the lands are purchased, my saints will occupy them. 30 And the armies of Israel will take possession of these lands and throw down the towers of my enemies, scatter their watchmen, and avenge me of my enemies to their third and fourth generations.

31 But first my army must become very great, so her banners are terrible to all nations. 32 The kingdoms of the world will acknowledge that the kingdom of Zion is God's kingdom, and they will become subject to her laws.

33 The first elders of my church will receive their endowments in my house, which will be built in the land of Kirtland.

3838 In the meantime, sue for peace, wave a peace flag, and proclaim peace. 41 Amen.

Section 106

Revelation given through Joseph Smith at Kirtland, Ohio, November 25, 1834

Appoint Warren A. Cowdery as high priest over my church (even though he has a vain heart)

1 Appoint Warren A. Cowdery as high priest over my church in the land of Freedom. 2 He should preach around his own place, and also in surrounding counties. 4 The Lord is coming soon. So gird your loins. 6 Everyone in heaven rejoiced when Warren bowed to my scepter. 7 So I'll have mercy on him, even though his heart is vain (if he humbles himself before me). 8 I've made a crown for him in my Father's mansions. Amen.

Section 107

Revelation on the priesthood, given through Joseph Smith at Kirtland, Ohio, in late winter or spring 1835

The two priesthoods

1 There are two priesthoods in the church: Melchizedek and Aaronic, including the Levitical priesthood. 2 Before Melchizedek, it was called the holy priesthood, after the order of the Son of God. 3 But to avoid using God's name too much, the ancient church called it the priesthood of Melchizedek. 6 There are two grand heads: the Melchizedek priesthood, and the Aaronic or Levitical priesthood. 16 Only literal descendants of Aaron can be priests. in the priesthood of Aaron, aka the lesser priesthood. 40 The priesthood is handed down from father to son and belongs to the literal descendants of the chosen seed.

The priesthood from Adam to Noah

41 The order began in the days of Adam. 42 Seth was ordained by Adam when he was 69 years old and was blessed by Adam three years before Adam died. 43 Seth was a perfect man, who looked just like his father. He looked so much like his father, in fact, that he could be distinguished from him only by his age. 44 Enos was 139 years (and four months) old when he was ordained by Adam. 45 Cainan was 87 years old when he was ordained. 46 Mahalaleel was 496 years and seven days old when he was ordained by Adam. 47 Jared was 200 years old when Adam ordained him. 48 Enoch was 25 years old when Adam ordained him, and 65 when Adam blessed him. 49 Enoch walked with God for 365 years, making him 430 years old when he was translated. 50 Methuselah was 100 years old when Adam ordained him. 51 Lamech was 32 years old when he was ordained by Seth. 52 Noah was ten years old when he was ordained by Methuselah.

Jesus and Michael the Archangel (aka Adam) in the valley of Adam-ondi-Ahman

53 Three years before Adam died, he blessed Seth, Enos, Cainan, Mahalaleel, Jared, Enoch, and Methuselah, who were all high priests in the valley of Adam-ondi-Ahman. 54 The Lord appeared to him, and they blessed Adam, and called him Michael the archangel. 57 These things are written in the book of Enoch, which you'll hear more about someday.

The twelve, seventy, the other seventy, and seven times seventy

91 The President of the office of the High Priesthood rules the whole church like Moses. 92 Here is wisdom: He is to be a seer, revelator, translator, and prophet. 94 The seventh president presides over the six. 95 And the seven presidents choose another seventy besides the first seventy, and they preside over them. 96 And so on, with another seventy, until seven times seventy, as required. 97 These seventy are traveling preachers to Gentiles first, and also the Jews. 100 Amen.
