Episode 267: Love one another

John 13-16

Jesus washes his disciples' feet

13 1-2 After supper, before the feast of the Passover, the devil was put in Judas Iscariot's heart.

3-5 Jesus took off his clothes, wrapped a towel around his waist, poured water into a bowl and began to wash his disciples feet.

6-8 When Jesus came to Peter, he said, "You'll never wash my feet."

Jesus said, “If I don't wash your feet, you have nothing to do with me.”

9 Peter said, “Okay, but wash my hands and my head, too.”

10-11 Jesus said, “If you're clean, you only need your feet washed. And you're all clean. Well, most of you anyway.”

12 When Jesus was finished, he put his clothes on, and said,

Do you know what I just did?

13 You call me Master and Lord. And I am.

14 If I, your Lord and Master, have washed your feet, you ought to wash one another's feet.

15 I've set an example for you.

Judas betrays Jesus

21 Jesus said, “One of you will betray me.”

22 The disciples looked at each other, wondering who it was.

23 The disciple whom Jesus loved was leaning on Jesus's breast.

24 Peter asked him to ask Jesus who it was.

25 So the disciple lying on Jesus's breast said to him, “Who is it, Lord?”

26 Jesus said, “It's the one that I give this piece of bread to after I dip it in the sauce.”

And he gave the piece of bread to Judas Iscariot.

27 After supper, Satan entered into Judas.

And Jesus said to him, “Do what you're going to do quickly.”

30-31 When Judas had left, Jesus said, “Now the Son of man will be glorified, and God will be glorified in him.”

A new commandment: Love one another

34 Jesus said,

I give you a new commandment: Love one another, as I have loved you.

35 If you love each other, everyone will know you're my disciples.

The Farewell Discourse

14 Jesus said,

2 My Father's house has many mansions. I'm going to prepare a place for you.

5 Thomas said, “Lord, we don't know where you're going. How can we know the way?”

6 Jesus said,

I'm the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except by me.

7 If you've seen me, you've seen the Father.

8 Philip said, “Show us the Father and we'll be satisfied.”

9 Jesus said,

Have I been with you all this time, Philip, and yet you still don't know me?

If you've seen me, you've seen the Father.

12 Whoever believes in me will be able to do even greater miracles than I have done.

13 I'll give you whatever you ask for in my name.

15 If you love me, keep my commandments.

16 I'll ask the Father and he'll give you another Comforter, who will live with you forever.

21 If you love me, my Father and I will love you.

26 The Father will send the Holy Ghost, who will teach you everything and remind you of the things I said to you.

28 My Father is greater than I.

30 I won't say much more, since the prince of this world is coming.

15 1 I’m the true vine. My Father is the gardener.

3 Now you're all clean. My words have cleaned you.

5 I'm the vine. You're the branches.

6 If you're not attached to me, you'll be burned.

7 But if you're attached to me, I'll give you whatever you ask for.

13 There's no greater love than this: that a friend give up his life for his friends.

14 And you are my friends, if you do whatever I say.

15 Everything my Father told me, I've told you.

16 Whatever you ask the Father in my name will be given to you.

18 If the world hates you, remember that it hated me before it hated you.

19 If you were of the world, it would love you. But you're not of the world, so it hates you.

23 Whoever hates me hates my Father.

26 Later I'll send the Comforter, the spirit of truth, to you.

He'll come from the Father and will tell you about me.

16 1-2 They'll expel you from the synagogues.

And the time will come when they think killing you does a service to God.

3 They'll do these things because they don't know the Father or me.

5 But now I go to him who sent me. And none of you ask me, "Where are you going?"

7 It's better for you if I go away. If I don't go away, the Comforter won't come to you. But if I do, I'll send him to you.

8-9 When he comes, he'll accuse the world of the sin of not believing in me.

13-14 When the Spirit of truth comes, he'll glorify me.

15 Everything the Father has is mine.

23 Whatever you ask the Father in my name will be given to you.

29 After Jesus finished speaking, his disciples said to him,

30 Now you're speaking clearly.

Now we know that you know everything, and that you come from God.

31 Jesus said to them

Do you now believe?

32 The time is coming when you'll all scatter and leave me alone.

33 The world will have tribulation. But be happy. I've overcome the world.

A few more words about this episode

In John 13:36-38, Jesus tells Peter that he will deny him three times before the cock crows. I'm leaving this out since it was in a previous episode. (Mt 26:69-75, Episode 247)
The disciple whom Jesus loved (13:23)
The text doesn't identify "the disciple whom Jesus loved." Christians traditionally have thought it was the apostle John, the son of Zebedee. But others think he was Lazarus, since Lazarus is the only male who is said to have been loved by Jesus. (See Wikipedia: Disciple whom Jesus loved)
