Episode 20: The end of Abinadi

Mosiah 14-17

Abinadi reads Isaiah 53

14 1 Yea, even doth not Isaiah say….

Jesus is both the father and the son

15 1 Abinadi said to them,

God himself will come down to earth. 2-3 He’ll be called the Son of God, but he’ll be both the Father and the Son.

Jesus is both the Father and the Son.

4-9 They are both one God. He will be crucified and ascend into heaven.”

The seed of Jesus

10 But who will be his seed? 11 Whoever hears the words of the prophets and believes that the Lord will redeem his people is his seed. 12 Those whose sins he has born – they are his seed. 13 And the holy prophets? They are his seed too.

Beautiful feet

15-18 How beautiful on the mountains were their feet!

Abinadi's last speech

16 1 Abinadi stretched forth his hands and said: “Someday everyone will see eye to eye and confess before God. 2 The wicked will be cast out, and will howl, weep, wail, and gnash their teeth. 3 Because they are carnal, sensual, and devilish. 11 But those who are good will have an endless life of happiness, while those who are evil will be delivered to the devil for endless damnation. 13 Remember that only through Christ can you be saved. 15 Christ is the Eternal Father. Amen.”

The end of Abinadi

17 1 When Abinadi finished his speech, King Noah told the priests to kill him. 2-3 But there was one among them whose name was Alma, who believed Abinadi. Alma pleaded for Abinadi, but the king became even more angry and ordered his servants to kill Alma too. 4 But Alma escaped and hid for many days. While hiding he wrote down the words that Abinadi had spoken.

5 The king sent guards to throw Abinadi into prison. 6-8 After three days he sent for Abinadi and said to him, “Abinadi, we’ve decided that you should die for saying that God would come down from heaven. But if you recant, we’ll let you go.”

9-10 Abinadi said, “I won’t recant. If you kill me, you’re killing an innocent man.”

11 King Noah was afraid of what God would do to him if he killed Abinadi, so he was about to release him. 12 But the priests said, “He has reviled the king and stirred up anger against him. So he must be killed.”

13-14 So they took him and bound him and scourged him with faggots. Then they burned him to death. But before he died, he gave a little speech, saying, 15 “Your seed will cause many people to suffer for their beliefs. 16-19 And for that God will afflict you with diseases, you’ll hunted by your enemies, and you’ll be burned to death.”

20 And with that, Abinadi died, sealing the truth of his words with his death.

A few more words about this episode

Yea, even doth not Isaiah say…. (14:1)
A complete waste of a golden plate.
In the last chapter (Mosiah 13, Episode 13), Abinadi was busy lecturing Noah and his priests about the Ten Commandments. Without explanation, he starts quoting his favorite book of the Bible, Isaiah (chapter 53).
How Abinadi managed to quote from the King James Version of the Bible, which wouldn't exist for another 1,750+ years, is one of the great mysteries (or miracles?) of the Book of Mormon.
He’ll be called the Son of God, but he’ll be both the Father and the Son. (15:2-3)
Jesus is both the Father and the Son. (He is his own father.)
Is Jesus both the Father and the Son?
How beautiful on the mountains were their feet! (15:15-18)
How beautiful were the feet, you ask? So beautiful it had to be repeated four times in four verses.
How beautiful are the feet in the Book of Mormon!
Only through Christ can you be saved. (16:6)
Abinadi preaches salvation through Christ, 150 years before Christ was born.
Christ is the Eternal Father. (16:15)
Is Jesus both the Father and the Son?
God will afflict you with diseases, you’ll hunted by your enemies, and you’ll be burned to death. (17:18)
The Book of Mormon claims that this prophecy was fulfilled in Alma 25:9
