0 The Devil founds the Catholic church (1 Nephi 13-15)

Episode 4: The devil founds the Catholic church

1 Nephi 13-15

13 1 And the angel said, "Look!" 6 So I looked and saw the most abominable church, and the devil who is the founder of it.

Columbus discovers America

12 I saw the man who went forth upon the many waters to the seed of my brothers in the promised land.

God helps the Gentiles slaughter the Native Americans

13 I saw the Spirit of God bring other Gentiles across the many waters. 14 Then the wrath of God descended upon the seed of my brethren, who were defeated and scattered by multitudes of Gentiles. 15 The power of the Lord was with the Gentiles, who were white, exceedingly fair and beautiful, like my people before they were killed.

God helps the Americans win the Revolutionary War

17 I saw that the mother Gentiles were gathering to fight against them. 18-19 But the power of God delivered the Gentiles out of the hands of the mother Gentiles and of all other nations.

The Catholic Church removed the plain and precious parts of the Bible

20 The Gentiles carried a book with them. The angel asked me, "Do you know the meaning of the book?" I answered, "No, I don't." The angel said, 23 “It came out of the mouth of a Jew. 24 It contains the gospel of the Lord. But the great and abominable church took away its plain and precious things.”

The Book of Mormon restores the Bible

34 This is what the Lamb of God says: "I'll give the Gentiles a gospel that will be plain and precious. 35 I'll show myself to your seed so they'll write many plain and precious things. So that after your seed dwindles in unbelief, these things will be shown to the Gentiles. 36 In them will be my gospel."

39 And I saw other books, which come from the power of the Lamb, which will convince the Gentiles, the remnant of the seed of my brothers, and the Jews. 40 The angel said to me, “These last records will establish the truth of the first and establish the plain and precious things that were taken away.”

The two churches and a great and marvelous work

14 3 A great pit has been dug by that great and abominable church, which was founded by the devil to lead souls to hell. 7 But someday I will do a great and marvelous work. Then everyone will have a choice: believe in it or be damned to hell. 10 There are only two churches: the church of the Lamb of God and the church of the devil, the whore of all the earth. 15-17 I saw that the wrath of God is poured out on that great and abominable church, the mother of harlots, whose founder is the devil.

The book of Revelation is coming

19 The angel showed me a man in a white robe who would write about the end of the world. His writings will be plain, true, and easy to understand. 20-27 The angel said to me, “His name is John and he’ll write about the end of the world.” 28 But I, Nephi, am forbidden to write about the other things that I saw and heard. So I’ll stop writing now. 30 But it’s all true. And thus it is. Amen.

Nephi explains his father's dream

15 1-2 After I got carried away by the Spirit, I returned to my father’s tent. My brothers were arguing about how to interpret my father’s dream. 6 So I tried to straighten them out by saying, “You don’t understand because you didn’t ask God to help you understand. That, and you don’t obey the commandments, and you’ve hardened your hearts. But here are some things you need to understand: 27 The water that my father saw was filthiness. Whoever looks at it will have his mind swallowed up. 33-34 If your works are filthy, then you are filthy. And if you're filthy, you can't go to heaven because you'd make God's kingdom filthy. Since the kingdom of God isn't filthy, the devil made a filthy place to put filthy people after they die. 36 And that’s what I said to my brothers. Amen.

A few more words about this episode

So I looked and saw the most abominable church, and the devil who is the founder of it. (13:6)
In 600 BCE, an angel reveals to Nephi the founding of a great and abominable church.
Although the modern LDS church tries to deny it, this clearly refers to the Roman Catholic Church.
Here's what the LDS church's general authority Bruce R. McConkie said about it in Mormon Doctrine,
It is also to the Book of Mormon to which we turn for the plainest description of the Catholic Church as the great and abominable church.
(See Wikipedia: The great and abominable church)
I saw the man who went forth upon the many waters to the seed of my brothers in the promised land. (13:12)
The angel shows Nephi Christopher Columbus crossing the "many waters" to visit the native Americans in "the promised land." (Nearly 2100 years before it happened.)
(See Columbus: Fulfillment of Book of Mormon Prophecy)
I saw that the mother Gentiles were gathering to fight against them. (13:17)
The "mother Gentiles" were the Brittish who fought against the American Gentiles in the Revolutionary War.
Just another one of the amazing things Nephi saw. (In this case, nearly 2400 years before it happened.)
The Gentiles carried a book with them. (13:20)
The book was the Bible, of course, specifically the King James Version.
Here's what the LDS church's Book of Mormon Seminary Teacher's Manual says about this verse:
(23:20) What book was Nephi referring to? (The Bible. You may want to invite students to consider writing the Bible next to 1 Nephi 13:20.)
It came out of the mouth of a Jew. (13:23)
The book that came out of the mouth of a Jew is the angel's clever way of referring to the Bible.
I'll give the Gentiles a gospel that will be plain and precious. (13:34-35)
God will show the American gentiles his plain and precious gospel: the Book of Mormon.
Here's what he LDS church's Book of Mormon Seminary Teacher's Manual says about these verses:
(You may want to invite students to consider writing next to 1 Nephi 13:35 that "these things" refers to the Book of Mormon.)
And I saw other books (13:39)
The "other books" are the other supposedly sacred books in the LDS canon: The Doctrine and Covenants, the Pearl of Great Price, and the Joseph Smith Translation of the Bible.
Here's what the LDS church's Book of Mormon Seminary Teacher's Manual says about this verse:
What "other books" has the Lord brought forth as part of the Restoration? (The Doctrine and Covenants, the Pearl of Great Price, and the Joseph Smith Translation of the Bible.)
A great pit has been dug by that great and abominable church, which was founded by the devil to lead souls to hell. (14:3)
The Catholic church was founded by the devil to lead souls to hell.
Someday I will do a great and marvelous work. (14:7)
The angel tells Nephi that the lamb of God (Jesus) says that the time will come (2423 years later) when a 17-year-old treasure digger from New York (Joseph Smith) will find some golden plates and translate them by staring into his hat at some magic rocks and thereby produce the "great and marvelous work" that we now know as the Book of Mormon. This book is, according to the angel, the best and most important book by far that you, me, or anyone else will ever read. And we'll be tortured forever after we die unless we believe it.
There are only two churches: the church of the Lamb of God and the church of the devil (14:10)
There are only two churches: the church of the Lamb of God (The Mormons), and the church of the devil (the Catholic Church). You either belong to the good church or the bad church (the mother of abominations, the whore of all the earth, whose founder is the devil).
The angel showed me a man in a white robe who would write about the end of the world. (14:19)
The angel shows Nephi a man in a white robe who would write true things about the end of the world in a book that proceeds from out of the mouth of a Jew. The book would be written in a plain and clear way so that everyone would understand it. Later (v.27), the angel identifies this man as John, the author of the Book of Revelation.
My brothers were arguing about how to interpret my father’s dream. (15:2)
Remember back in chapter 8 when Lehi had a dream about a tree? Yeah, well, it's back again. And this time it's causing trouble for Nephi's brothers.
You see, they just couldn't figure it all out. What was it, anyway?
Of course the main problem with Nephi's brothers was that they didn't inquire of the Lord enough. It's nearly impossible to believe complete and obvious nonsense without God's help.
Another reason they didn't believe the stuff about the tree is that they were evil. They didn't follow the commandments and their hearts were way too hard.
