0 SAB Mark 8

And if thy hand offend thee, cut it off: it is better for thee to enter into life maimed, than having two hands to go into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched. Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched. 9:43

CHAPTER 8

Jesus feeds four thousand
8:1-9, Cf. Mt 15:32-39

1 In those days the multitude being very great, and having nothing to eat, Jesus called his disciples unto him, and saith unto them,

2I have compassion on the multitude, because they have now been with me three days, and have nothing to eat:

3 And if I send them away fasting to their own houses, they will faint by the way; for divers of them came from far.

Jesus said to his disciples,

I feel sorry for the people.

They haven't eaten anything in three days. [1]

4 And his disciples answered him, From whence can a man satisfy these men with bread here in the wilderness?

His disciples said to him,

Where can we find food for them in the wilderness?

5 And he asked them, How many loaves have ye? And they said, Seven.

Jesus said, "How many loaves do you have?"

They answered, "Seven."

6 And he commanded the people to sit down on the ground: and he took the seven loaves, and gave thanks, and brake, and gave to his disciples to set before them; and they did set them before the people.

Jesus told the people to sit down on the ground.

Then he took the seven loaves, gave thanks, broke them, and gave the bread to his disciples, who distributed it to the people.

7 And they had a few small fishes: and he blessed, and commanded to set them also before them.

There were also a few small fishes that they distributed among the people.

8So they did eat, and were filled: and they took up of the broken meat that was left seven baskets.

Everyone ate as much as they wanted.

Then the disciples gathered seven baskets of leftovers.

9 And they that had eaten were about four thousand: and he sent them away.

About four thousand people were fed.

Then Jesus sent them away.

The Pharisees ask Jesus for a sign
8:10-13, Cf. Mt 16:1-4

10 And straightway he entered into a ship with his disciples, and came into the parts of Dalmanutha.

Jesus and his disciples left on a boat to Dalmanutha.

11 And the Pharisees came forth, and began to question with him, seeking of him a sign from heaven, tempting him.

The Pharisees tempted Jesus by asking him for a sign from heaven.

12And he sighed deeply in his spirit, and saith, Why doth this generation seek after a sign? verily I say unto you, There shall no sign be given unto this generation.

Jesus sighed and said,

Why does this generation ask for a sign?

There'll be no sign given to this generation. [2]

13 And he left them, and entering into the ship again departed to the other side.

Then Jesus got back on the boat and went to the other side.

The yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees
8:14-21, Cf. Mt 16:5-12, Lk 12:1-3

14 Now the disciples had forgotten to take bread, neither had they in the ship with them more than one loaf.

The disciples forgot to bring bread with them.

15 And he charged them, saying, Take heed, beware of the leaven of the Pharisees, and of the leaven of Herod.

Jesus said,

Beware of the yeast of the Pharisees and of Herod.

16 And they reasoned among themselves, saying, It is because we have no bread.

The disciples said to one another,

Is he saying this because we have no bread?

17 And when Jesus knew it, he saith unto them, Why reason ye, because ye have no bread? perceive ye not yet, neither understand? have ye your heart yet hardened?

But Jesus knew what they were thinking, so he said,

Why are you talking about not having bread?

Don't you understand? Have you hardened your hearts?

18 Having eyes, see ye not? and having ears, hear ye not? and do ye not remember?

You have eyes, but don't see.

Ears, but don't listen.

19 When I brake the five loaves among five thousand, how many baskets full of fragments took ye up? They say unto him, Twelve.

I fed five thousand with five loaves.

How many baskets were leftover?

They answered, "Twelve."

20 And when the seven among four thousand, how many baskets full of fragments took ye up? And they said, Seven.

Jesus said,

And when I fed four thousand with seven loaves, how many baskets were leftover?

And they said, "Seven."

21 And he said unto them, How is it that ye do not understand?

Jesus said,

So why don't you understand?

Jesus spits on a blind man's eyes
(and he sees trees walking)
8:22-26

22 And he cometh to Bethsaida; and they bring a blind man unto him, and besought him to touch him.

When Jesus came to Bethsaida, they brought a blind man and asked him to touch him. [3]

23 And he took the blind man by the hand, and led him out of the town; and when he had spit on his eyes, and put his hands upon him, he asked him if he saw ought.

Jesus took the blind man by the hand and led him out of town.

Then he spit on his eyes and asked him if he could see. [4]

24 And he looked up, and said, I see men as trees, walking.

The man looked up and said,

I see men that look like trees walking. [5]

25After that he put his hands again upon his eyes, and made him look up: and he was restored, and saw every man clearly.

Jesus put his hands on the man's eyes and then he could see clearly.

26 And he sent him away to his house, saying, Neither go into the town, nor tell it to any in the town.

Jesus sent him away and told him not to tell anyone.

Who am I? (Don't tell anyone)
8:27-30, Cf. Mt 16:13-20, Lk 9:18-21

27 And Jesus went out, and his disciples, into the towns of Caesarea Philippi: and by the way he asked his disciples, saying unto them, Whom do men say that I am?

Jesus and his disciples went to the towns of Caesarea and Philippi. On their way, Jesus asked them,

Who do people say that I am? [6]

28 And they answered, John the Baptist; but some say, Elijah; and others, One of the prophets.

They answered,

Some say you're John the Baptist, others Elijah or one of the prophets.

29 And he saith unto them, But whom say ye that I am? And Peter answereth and saith unto him, Thou art the Christ.

Jesus said, "Who do you say that I am?"

Peter said, "You are the Christ."

30 And he charged them that they should tell no man of him.

Jesus said, "Don't tell anyone." [7]

Jesus foretells his death and resurrection
(and calls Peter "Satan")
8:31-38, Cf. Mt 16:21-26, Lk 9:22-27

31 And he began to teach them, that the Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected of the elders, and of the chief priests, and scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again.

Jesus told his disciples that he'd be rejected, suffer, and die.

Then he'd rise from the dead after three days. [8]

32 And he spake that saying openly. And Peter took him, and began to rebuke him.

Peter rebuked him for saying it.

33 But when he had turned about and looked on his disciples, he rebuked Peter, saying, Get thee behind me, Satan: for thou savourest not the things that be of God, but the things that be of men.

Jesus rebuked Peter, saying,

Get away from me, Satan! [9]

34 And when he had called the people unto him with his disciples also, he said unto them, Whosoever will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.

Then Jesus called all the people to him and said,

If you want to follow me, you must deny yourself and pick up your cross.

35 For whosoever will save his life shall lose it; but whosoever shall lose his life for my sake and the gospel's, the same shall save it.

36 For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?

37 Or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?

If you want to save your life, you'll lose it.

If you lose your life for me and my gospel, you'll save it.

38Whosoever therefore shall be ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation; of him also shall the Son of man be ashamed, when he cometh in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.

If any of you in this sinful and adulterous generation is ashamed of me and my words,

then I'll be ashamed of you when I come in the glory of God with his angels.
