0 EJAT: Business, Law and Government

Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law. Matthew 5:18

All the Commandments in the Bible

    6. Business, Law and Government

There's a strange mix of business laws in the Bible. Here are a few examples: Don't sell real estate, don't charge interest on loans (except to strangers), and cancel all debts every seven years.

The commandments that deal with legal matters are difficult to describe or summarize. Bug there are some laws about ox goring that help explain the old saying, "It all depends on whose ox is being gored."

The Biblically Correct form of government is simple: God selects a king and everyone else obeys, fears, and honors him. No one may curse or try to overthrow him.

Most of Foreign Policy is covered later in the War and Genocide section. But there are a few commandments left over, telling us not to lend money to foreign nations, or borrow from them, or to learn any of their abominations.

The small sections on swearing and promises are interest, mostly because they contradict the teachings of Jesus and James in the New Testament.

Exodus 22:26-27

If the man be poor, thou shalt not sleep with his pledge: In any case thou shalt deliver him the pledge again when the sun goeth down, that he may sleep in his own raiment, and bless thee: and it shall be righteousness unto thee before the LORD thy God. Deuteronomy 24:12-13

According to the number of years after the jubile thou shalt buy of thy neighbour, and according unto the number of years of the fruits he shall sell unto thee: According to the multitude of years thou shalt increase the price thereof, and according to the fewness of years thou shalt diminish the price of it: for according to the number of the years of the fruits doth he sell unto thee.Leviticus 25:14-17

But if you don't buy it back within a year, the sale is final. You won't get it back even at the next jubilee year.

And if a man sell a dwelling house in a walled city, then he may redeem it within a whole year after it is sold within a full year may he redeem it. 34. Don't let unbelievers settle disputes between believers.

Dare any of you, having a matter against another, go to law before the unjust, and not before the saints?Do ye not know that the saints shall judge the world? and if the world shall be judged by you, are ye unworthy to judge the smallest matters?Know ye not that we shall judge angels? how much more things that pertain to this life?If then ye have judgments of things pertaining to this life, set them to judge who are least esteemed in the church.I speak to your shame. Is it so, that there is not a wise man among you? no, not one that shall be able to judge between his brethren? But brother goeth to law with brother, and that before the unbelievers. Now therefore there is utterly a fault among you, because ye go to law one with another. Why do ye not rather take wrong? why do ye not rather suffer yourselves to be defrauded? 1 Corinthians 6:1-7
