Why did Jarom command his son Omni to write on plates?

The second was angry, and kept not his first estate; and, at that day, many followed after him. The Book of Abraham 3:28

I, Omni, being commanded by my father, Jarom, that I should write somewhat upon these plates, to preserve our genealogy.
