The Behemoth

This creature is mentioned only in the Book of Job, but in that book, God himself describes the behemoth in great detail.

Here are some of the things that God says about him.
(God always speaks about "the behemoth" as though there is only one. And its pronouns are "him / his".)

The behemoth was created by God and eats grass.

Behold now behemoth, which I [God] made with thee; he eateth grass as an ox. Job 40:15

His strength is in his loins and navel.

Lo now, his strength is in his loins, and his force is in the navel of his belly. v. 16

His tail is stiff and long like a tree, and his stones are tied together.

He moveth his tail like a cedar: the sinews of his stones are wrapped together. v. 17

And he is the first and most important of God's creatures. Only God can kill defeat him with his sword.

He is the chief of the ways of God: he that made him can make his sword to approach unto him. v. 19

Bible believers have identified the behemoth as a hippopotamus, dinosaur, wildebeest, or crocodile.

But my favorite is the way these verses are translated by Stephen Mitchell: "Look now: the Beast that I made: he eats grass like a bull. Look: the power in his thighs, the pulsing sinews of his belly. His penis stiffens like a pine; his testicles bulge with vigor."
