A talking ant, a hoopoe bird, and the Queen of Sheba’s bare legs (Surah 27)

Episode 26: A talking ant, a hoopoe bird, and the Queen of Sheba’s bare legs

Surah 27: The Ant (An-Naml)

The greatest losers

1 Ta. Sin. The Quran makes everything plain. 2 It brings good tidings to believers.

4 We [Allah] lead those who do not believe in the hereafter astray by making things work out OK in this life, so that we can torment them forever in the next. 5 They will get the worst punishment and will be the greatest losers. 6 And you, Muhammad, receive the Quran from someone who is wise and aware.

Moses and the Pharaoh

7 Remember when Moses said to his family, “Lo! I see a fire far away. I'll borrow it so you can warm yourselves.”

8 But when he reached the fire, someone said, “Blessed is whoever is in the fire and whatever is around it.”

9 Allah said, “It's me. Allah, the mighty and wise, the Lord of the Worlds. Throw down your staff.”

10 So Moses threw down his staff and it writhed like a demon.

12 Then Allah said to Moses, “Put your hand in the bosom of your robe. It will come out white but unhurt. This will be one of the nine tokens that will be shown to Pharaoh and his evil-living folk.”

13 But when they saw them, they said, "This is mere magic."

A talking ant, a hoopoe bird, and the Queen of Sheba’s bare legs

15 David and Solomon said, “Allah likes us better than all of his believing slaves!”

16 Solomon said, “We know the language of birds.”

17 He gathered an army of jinn, humans, and birds.

18 In the Valley of the ants, an ant exclaimed, “Oh ants, enter your dwellings so Solomon's army doesn't crush you.”

The talking ant

19 And Solomon smiled and laughed at her speech, saying, “My Lord, include me among your righteous slaves.”

20-21 Solomon looked at the birds and said, “Where is the hoopoe? If he doesn't have an excuse for not being here, I'll kill him.”

22 It took a long time, but the hoopoe finally arrived and said, "I've come from Sheba with sure tidings."

23 A woman ruler had been given many things.

24 Her people were misled by Satan to worship the sun instead of Allah, the lord of the tremendous throne.

Common Hoopoe (Upupa epops)

27-28 Solomon said, “We'll see whether you’re telling the truth or not. Take this letter to them and bring back their answer.”

29 When the Queen of Sheeba received the letter, she said, “I've received a letter from Solomon. 35 I'm sending him a present.”

36-37 When Solomon received the present, he said, “I don't need this present. Return it. Who will bring me her throne?”

39 One of the giant jinns said to Solomon, “I'll bring it to you. I'm strong enough to do it.”

40 One of the chiefs who knew the scripture said, “I'll bring it to you.” And he brought her throne to Solomon.

41 Solomon said, "Disguise her throne."

When she came, they said to her, "Is this your throne?"

42 She said, "Yes, it is."

43 But she was a disbeliever.

44 Someone said to her, "Enter the hall."

When she entered, she saw a pool and bared her legs.

The Queen of Sheba bares her legs

Solomon said, "It's a hall made of smooth glass." She said, "I surrender with Solomon to Allah, the Lord of the Worlds."

The prophet Salih and the tribe of Thamud

45 We [Allah] sent Salih to Thamud, who said to them, “Worship Allah.” And it split them into two quarrelling parties.

47 They said, "We think you're up to no good."

Salih said, "Allah is testing you."

48 There were nine mischief makers in the land. 49 They said, "Let's attack Salih." 50 So they plotted a plot. And we [Allah] plotted a plot.

51 Then we destroyed them and all their people. 53 But we saved those who believed and warded off evil.

Lot: Do you lust after men instead of women?

54-55 Lot said to his people, “Are you going to commit abomination willingly? Do you have to lust after men instead of women?”

56 They said, “Expel Lot and his family from our town. They're trying to keep themselves clean!”

57 We [Allah] saved Lot and his family, except for his wife. We forced her to stay behind. 58 Then we rained a dreadful rain upon them.

Isn't he the best?

59 Praise be to Allah, and peace to the slaves that he has chosen. Is Allah the best, or should he have some partners?

60-64 Isn't he the best?

Old men's fables

67-68 And yet disbelievers say, “When we are dead, will we be brought back to life again? We were promised things like this before. Isn't this all just old men's fables?”

Flying hills

87-88 Remind them that when trumpet blows, the hills will fly through the clouds. 90 And those who did evil will be flung on their faces in the fire. 92 So recite the Quran.
