7 Questions by Elias Higbee: What is meant by the command in Isaiah, 52d chapter, 1st verse, which saith: Put on thy strength, O Zion—and what people had Isaiah reference to?
Questions from Elias Higbee:
Who is Isaiah referring to when he says in 52:1, "Be strong, Zion"?
8 He had reference to those whom God should call in the last days, who should hold the power of priesthood to bring again Zion, and the redemption of Israel; and to put on her strength is to put on the authority of the priesthood, which she, Zion, has a right to by lineage; also to return to that power which she had lost.
That refers to those God will call in the last days who hold the power of the priesthood.
9 What are we to understand by Zion loosing herself from the bands of her neck; 2d verse?
What does Isaiah 52:2 mean by Zion loosing herself from the bands of her neck?
10 We are to understand that the scattered remnants are exhorted to return to the Lord from whence they have fallen; which if they do, the promise of the Lord is that he will speak to them, or give them revelation. See the 6th, 7th, and 8th verses. The bands of her neck are the curses of God upon her, or the remnants of Israel in their scattered condition among the Gentiles.
This refers to the scattered remnants.
See Isaiah 52:6-8.
The bands of her neck are the curses of God - either that or the scattered remnants of Israel among the Gentiles.
"And there shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse, and a Branch shall grow out of his roots ... he shall smite the earth: with the rod of his mouth, and with the breath of his lips shall he slay the wicked. And righteousness shall be the girdle of his loins, and faithfulness the girdle of his reins." Isaiah 11:1-5
The Lord (Jesus) says these verses refer to himself. But when did he smite the earth with the rod of his mouth or kill people with his breath? I think the Lord is confused about his own identity.
Although Jesus clearly doesn't know the answer to this question, the Mormons tell us that he meant to say "Joseph Smith is the stem of Jesse."
Once again, the Lord rambles on, repeating his previous non-answer.
